THE LITTLE BUILDING & CUTLER MAJESTIC THEATER

IMG_3653.jpg

The Little Building is an Emerson College dormitory in Boston's Theater District. In the mid-1800s, the area of the building was home to Hotel Pelham, one of America's first apartment buildings. At least six people were killed and 60 injured at the building's corner on March 4, 1897 during a gas-lie explosion. Many believe that the hauntings at the Little Building are connected to the residual energy of the explosion. Residents of the dorm have reported mysterious scratches after waking up in the morning. Some believe that this is the spirit of a dentist, and have woken up in the night to the image of a person holding a tray of dental tools. Records indicate that the explosion caused a dentist to be blown away from his patient during surgery. The dentist did not die from the explosion, but his spirit is rumored to haunt the building.

There have been numerous types of paranormal encounters reported at the Little Building. One frequently spotted spirit is known as "freight girl." She is a young girl searching for her toy ball who allegedly fell to her death in the freight elevator during construction in 1917. Legend says that she was the daughter of a construction worker, but no archives or records indicate that there was an elevator-related tragedy in the building. There is a similar ghost story connected to Charlesgate, a building that previously served as an Emerson dorm.

The Cutler Majestic Theater is an Emerson-owned theater located on Tremont Street. It is one of the oldest functioning theaters in the United States. The spirit that is spotted most at the theater is that of an old mayor who is said to have died in the theater while watching a show. However, there is no record of this ever happening. Other spirits that are known to haunt the theater are a couple who died in a car crash leaving the theater in the 1930s. People have said that they sit and watch shows, but leave before the second act. Their young daughter has been heard crying in the theater. When entering a room known as the “Nightmare Room,” people have felt uneasy and short of breath. Others have seen a man walking on the grid of the theater.
